I have been told that hinduism is not really a religion comparable to the others, it is an umbrella religion, which (due to its theology) allows the worship of any number of different gods. it is much more a part of culture and society than it is a specific religious path. i once heard hinduism described as a sort of religious market, with many different shops and stalls within it. an example of this was given by a lecturer who said that due to the hindu idea of one ultimate god (brahman) who has infinite number of faces, it is even possible for jews, christians and muslims to be classified as hindu, since they too are using devotion to one god as a path to the ultimate brahman.
