The Buddhas are really rare. But there are different Buddhas with a different capability of salvation. Buddha Shakyamuni was a great savior. Hundreds of his disciples attained an unimaginably high Arahat level. Of course, there are Buddhas with weaker salvation capabilities. Nevertheless these Buddhas can save a few of their disciples. The great saviors like Buddha Shakyamuni are born once in a several thousands years on the Earth. The Buddhas with weaker salvation capabilities appear more often. I wouldn't wonder if there are a few of them among us nowadays. Life after life their salvation capabilities get stronger until they become great saviors like Buddha Shakyamuni was.
: About a year ago I posted a measage on this forum asking if anyone had attained Nirvana since the Buddha. I got many helpful replies telling me that there was and that there were even some alive today. Does anyone know roughly how many Buddhas there are alive today in physical form? Tens? Hundreds? Thousands? Do most monastries have a resident enlightened Buddha or are they very rare? Any help greatly appreciated.
