As I mention above, you don't HAVE to be a registered member of the new forum to use it, you can work it the same way as this one (I just posted a message there as an unregistered poster as an example). But if you are registered, you will have certain advantages.
When you are registered or log in (the latter not usually necessary as a cookie is saved on your computer that identifies you) you won't have to fill in your name or email address when you make a posting or reply, or use the chat room, because the program will know who you are.
At the moment, you can practise sending or replying to posts (check out the options on the message form to see the various things you can do)or doing whatever you want, you can't break anything! Don't forget to press reload after you return to the forum to make sure you have the latest page.
Can you be more specific about it messing up your computer? I don't understand how it could and I want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Please persevere, it really does work well, honest!
