The simple Buddhist explanation for these truly terrible disasters is that they are part of life and life is full of suffering. These terrible things happen for no purpose. Whereas most other religions would try to find some divine plan behind everything bad that happens, Buddhism simply acknowledges the needless suffering and tries to see what can be done about it. It's a hard truth to face but hiding behind the comfort of Gods divine plan won't really achieve much, except to provide temporary reassurance. Hope this helps.
