I'm not sure if I completely understand your question, but here goes. The breath is a constant thing for meditiation, we all have it... unless your dead. As for the cemetary meditation, it's intended to support the idea that we all die... and to help us gain realization to that fact. To realize just how certain we will die, and how little time we have, helps spurr our practice. Again to the breathing part... the Buddha realized how concentration on breathing is a very effective method to strengthen the mind. When the mind becomes focused enough, one has the concentrative power to gain true insight into the world without delusion of any sort. That's my take on your questions. Metta.
