The writings of the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, which I have most recently read, takes something similar to this discussion into account. A student asked him if a murderer were entering his house and going to harm my children and my wife, would the murder of the murderer be justified? The murder of the man would save the lives of the children and the wife, and for the time being the husbands life, but the killing of another man results immediately in negative karma that will result in the husband being reborn in a hell realm in his next life.
