(Uh, this is like a re-run from my previous posting. It's a pleasure to meet you, Laura.)
I have for some years chosen to be known only as Savaka whenever I'm online on Buddhist grounds.
I'm Chinese and I live in Malaysia. Married with four children. I'm 28 (which means I married pretty young).
Frankly, I'm a self-taught Buddhist of the Theravadin tradition. I have spent time as a forest monk and have read the Tipitaka extensively since I was 15 years old. There was a time when my dedication to the religion was very strong. I was a meditation instructor and led a very Buddhist life even as a layman. However, in recent years, beginning from the Asian economic crisis in 1997, I fell on very hard times. It made me realise that I had spent a great deal of my youthhood practising meditation and learning the sutras and mantras. But I did not focus enough on building my career.
I halted my intense Buddhist practices since 1998 and focus on work. Now, I'm the Head of Operations in an Internet company with 14 people reporting to me. I bring home a nice fat pay cheque every month and the company provides my family with a fully furnished condo. It looks as if I'll be heading on to better pastures soon for I have been head-hunted by a larger Internet company here.
But there is a dark side. I have not meditated for a long time. I have gone back to the drink. I confess that I haven't visited any Buddhist temples in more than a year. And I have not chanted the scriptures for what feels like a lifetime. But the knowledge of the religion is still deeply planted in me.
I stumbled across this community during Wesak last May, when I was nostalgic and yearned to get in touch with my spiritual side.
I check this site about 10 times a day during office hours (unless I have busy projects). It helps me stay in touch with Buddhism. And many thanks to all of you for that.
